1991, what a year. Tim Berners-Lee introduced the human race to the World Wide Web. Bryan Adams had a record-breaking run at #1 with ‘(Everything I Do) I Do IT for You’. And an engineer called Lee Dennis joined a small but ambitious photocopier dealership in Rochester called Systems Technology.
Little did we know that 25 years on we would be celebrating his 25th year at the company – and four of those as Service Manager. From all the team, we wish you huge congratulations, Lee!
We spoke to our London Team Leader, Robert Impey, who was mentored by Lee and knows him best.
What did Lee do before Systems Technology?
He completed his engineering apprenticeship when employed by a local food packaging company called Jacob White. Technically minded, he wanted a greater challenge and saw the photocopier industry on the verge of becoming digital, so trained as an engineer with a small copier dealer. It was a redundancy that brought him to Systems Technology, and the rest is history.
What was Lee like as a mentor?
Lee is a great engineer and incredibly customer focused. He was a senior technician at the time, his laid back and approachable demeanour made him a great mentor. Now, as then, he is welcoming and works towards solving whatever problem he is presented.
Was Lee the natural choice to become Service Manager?
He’ll probably be embarrassed when I say this, but he was. Under challenging company circumstances in 2012, with the tragic loss of our then Service Director, Lee stepped up and led the team when it was needed most.
What difference does Lee make at Systems Technology?
Without a doubt, it is his belief in the philosophy on which the company was founded. We engineers deliver Preventative Maintenance to our customers every day, Lee’s mantra being ‘it’s not how many times you attend a client’s machine, it’s how happy they are’.
And what about the man himself?
His dry wit keeps us all amused, particularly when the pressure is on. That’s when we often joke that his screwdriver looks strangely like a hammer! In all seriousness, Lee is a confident, professional and smart engineer who has grown at Systems Technology to now be responsible for the management and welfare of 22 engineers, including apprentices. He has earnt all our respect, and we doff our caps at his 25-year success!
