This August saw the ninth Martha Trust car challenge hit the road, and this time, it was ‘Rome or Bust’.
In the past nine years the annual car challenges have raised over £176,000 in sponsorship, taking the drivers and their enthusiastic passengers to major cities across Europe, including Barcelona, Frankfurt, Geneva, Madrid, Monte Carlo, and Paris. This year saw teams travel over 1,800 km in three days, from Dover to Rome in cars worth no more than £200.
Twenty-four adventurous participants in nine teams set off from Folkestone on the Eurotunnel on Saturday 3rd September, arriving in Rome on Monday 5th September. Team themes include Scooby Doo, and Grans on the Run. As a primary sponsor for the last five years, Systems Technology funded the ‘Martha Car’ – the New Romenatics.
The 2016 challenge has raised over £22,500 in sponsorship. Julie Gayler from Martha Trust said “I would like to thank our main sponsors and all the participants for making the 2016 challenge such a successful and memorable event. Yet again we have made lots of good friends, who have kindly given up their time to raise money for Martha.”
Next year the charity is returning to Monte Carlo in ‘Monte Carlo Madness’ on Saturday 16th September. The usual rules apply: cars must cost no more than £200 with full tax and MOT, and each team of two must pledge to raise a minimum of £1,500 in sponsorship. Ferry crossings, accommodation and flights home are covered. For more information or to register a team visit www.marthatrust.org.uk/montecarlomadness
